Commissioning FAQ
Answers to questions about our collaborative creation process
The Commissioning Process
Old Milan is not a traditional clothing brand—we are commissioning artisans. Unlike brands that create seasonal collections for mass consumption, we create nothing until it is commissioned by a client. Our designs serve as starting points for collaboration, not finished products for purchase.
No. Old Milan does not produce any ready-to-wear clothing. Every garment in our workshop is created specifically in response to a client's commission. We believe true luxury lies in creation, not selection.
Our process follows four stages:
- You Conceive: Begin with an idea or inspiration
- We Consult: Our master tailors guide you through possibilities
- We Craft: Your vision is meticulously brought to life
- You Command: The finished creation is revealed
Throughout this journey, you are the creative director—we are your artisans.
Absolutely. Our designs serve as inspiration and starting points for your commission. We encourage clients to modify every aspect—from fabric and fit to details like buttons, lapels, and lining. The final creation should reflect your vision, not ours.
Timeline & Investment
The commissioning process typically takes 4-6 weeks from initial consultation to final delivery. This timeframe respects the traditional methods of Milanese craftsmanship, where quality cannot be rushed. Each garment receives the time and attention it deserves.
Commissions begin at $1,200 for tailored shirts and range to $8,000+ for complex outerwear or suits using rare materials. During your consultation, we provide transparent pricing based on your specific vision and material selections.
Remember: you are not purchasing a garment—you are commissioning a wearable piece of art that exists only because you imagined it.
We require a 50% deposit to begin craftsmanship, with the balance due upon completion before delivery. We accept all major credit cards, wire transfers, and certified checks.
Materials & Craftsmanship
We source exclusively from heritage mills and specialty suppliers who share our commitment to quality and ethics. Our materials include:
- Wools from high-altitude herds in Mongolia and Scotland
- Linens and cottons from nutrient-rich soils of Italy and Egypt
- Specialty fibers like peace silk and vicuña from protected sources
Each batch is tested for quality before being approved for commissions.
Our artisans employ traditional Milanese techniques including:
- Hand-padded collars and lapels
- Pick-stitched seams for flexibility and durability
- Reinforced stress points at sleeves, pockets, and closures
- Hand-finished buttonholes and details
Each garment represents 25-40 hours of meticulous craftsmanship.
Care & Maintenance
Each commission includes specific care instructions tailored to your materials. Generally, we recommend:
- Dry cleaning only for suits and structured garments
- Hand washing for knitwear and delicate fabrics
- Using cedar hangers and breathable garment bags for storage
- Professional pressing to maintain shape and structure
